As all the programs are for a Hungarian context, we have no English introduction into the details so far. However, in case of a sepcial interest we would gladly answer any questions related to our work and give a deeper insight.

about us

Kontur Nonprofit Association was founded in 2011 by students of Eötvös Loránd Science University (ELTE) with interdisciplinary backgrounds from lawyers to sociologists and social workers.

Today the organization operates with volunteers only, focusing on the disadvantaged social group living in (or has recently moved from) the segragated settlement of Hős utca in the 10th district of Budapest.

hős utca

The two blocks of Hős utca (’Hero Street’) „are considered to be among the few remaining slum-like neighborhoods in Budapest”. (1) It has always been inhabited by people of low social status. Despite the fact that it is bordered by the University of National Defence, the headquarters of the Police Intervention Force and the Counter Terrorism Centre the settlement became a center of drug (especially synthetic cannabinoids) distribution from the mid 2000’s. As a result of the news appearing in the media, all habitants have become stigmatized (a lot of them are already stigmatized Roma people).

„In 2017 the municipality received a pledge from the government to reconstruct Hős utca, which would mean demolishing the houses and relocating the population.” (1) But the municipality had no plan for the social rehabilitation and residential community is heterogeneous in housing statuses anyway.
Most apartments are in municipal property. Apartments left empty after the evicted residents were walled up. Some flats are in private ownership. The municipality wanted to remove the owners by buying them out of their properties, but the owners couldn’t accept the low price that was offered to them. And there are also some flats that are occupied illegally.

The proportion of children was always higher than average here. One of Kontur’s main goals was to offer as many useful activites as possible for children living in this poorly stimulated environment. In 2015 we opened a community space in the block with the support of the Norwegian Civic Fund, and provided weekly programs for children from ceramics to juggling, from storytelling to dramatic play. Also this space served as a home for common feasts, meetings, and volunteer trainings and helped in building the community of inhabitants, to make them able to enforce their rights more effectively. A few years ago, the municipality terminated our lease authorship. Since then, we have been able to organize significantly fewer programs and mainly do sightseeing trips, excursions and individual mentoring and family support became more prominent.

Parallel to this part of our team helps the needy in housing matters and advocacy, so that no families ends up in a worse situation than the one they lived in until now.

what we need?

1. Support to buy school equipment

We provided families in need with school equipment from pencils to backpacks, for 5 years in a row in the beginning of the school years, in September.

On top of the support received from our permanent supporters (ComputaCenter Hungary, Mill-R Papír Kft.),
we need to raise 100 000 HUF to guarantee that every child has complete equipment when school starts.

2. Community space

Over the years, we have collected many tools aimed at the development and employment of children, which we currently do not have the opportunity to use. We also need a space to continue our ceramics classes.
An office would greatly facilitate the operation of our organization and strengthen our negotiating position in certain cases.

3. Predictable, regular donation to continue programs for children and to help families in crisis
